What Is Documentary Wedding Photography? Joy-Filled Storytelling Through Honest Imagery

Kevin and Becca enter their reception as husband and wife.

What Is Documentary-Style Wedding Photography?

In short, documentary-style wedding photography is all about capturing the real, unfiltered moments of your day. Instead of asking you to pose for every photo, a documentary photographer invites you to simply live your day—fully and freely as you would without a photographer there.

The goal? Natural, unposed, and deeply candid images that tell the true story of your wedding. We focus on the real and the raw—the big emotions and the small, quiet in-between moments

What Does This Look Like?

Imagine this:

Grandma pulling you in for a tearful hug after the ceremony

Your dad quietly wiping away a tear during your vows

Kids sneaking under tables to play hide and seek at the reception

Your mother-in-law, barefoot and dancing like no one’s watching

These are the honest, beautiful, blink-and-you-miss-them moments that make your day unforgettable.

What Does Documentary Wedding Photography Mean for Me (and for You)?

For me, it means honoring your story. I’m not just here to take pictures—I’m here to feel what you feel and capture it in a way that brings those emotions rushing back for years to come.

Because yes, you’ll remember what your wedding looked like… but I want you to remember what it felt like.

The butterflies, the belly laughs, the quiet tears, the hand squeezes, the joy.

That’s what I’m here for.

Before your big day, don’t be surprised if I ask you a bunch of questions. I want to get to know you—who you are, what matters most to you, and how you two connect. The better I understand your story, the better I can capture those tiny, meaningful moments that make your day yours.

On the day itself, I work best as a fly on the wall. I’ll quietly observe and let the day unfold naturally, documenting it all as it happens. If your hair’s in your face or your dress needs a quick fix, don’t worry—I’ve got you. But I’ll never stop a real, emotional moment just to adjust a pose. That wouldn’t be candid, and it definitely wouldn’t be you.

If you’re looking for a photographer who genuinely cares about who you are, who will take time to understand your story, and who will capture images that let you relive your day—over and over again—then I might just be your person.

I’ll ask you questions, I’ll laugh with you, I might cry a little too. I want to feel your day so I can capture it truthfully.

Wait—Will You Still Do Some Portraits?

YES! Absolutely.

I’m going to say something controversial here… Your wedding isn’t just about you, it’s also about the people who shaped you—the family and friends who walked this journey with you.

So yes, we’ll take those important family portraits. But some of my favorite images come from the moments in between: The background selfies, the little brother giving bunny ears, and the toddler crawling behind the bride.

That’s the real magic.

If you’ve been wondering what documentary style wedding photography is, let’s talk about how we can capture your day exactly as it unfolds—real, raw, and unforgettable.

Tiny humans walking down the aisle are adorable—but beyond the cuteness, flower girls and ring bearers add a layer of sweetness, personality, and connection to your ceremony that adults simply can’t replicate.

Austin and Sadie’s engagement photos at the Joslyn Art Museum were an absolute dream to capture and easily some of my very favorites of 2025. They are the kind of couple who radiate joy and love everywhere they go, and that energy translated so beautifully into their photos.

One of the best ways to ensure your wedding day feels calm, joyful, and true to who you are is to create a thoughtful wedding day timeline.
