Tiny humans walking down the aisle are adorable—but beyond the cuteness, flower girls and ring bearers add a layer of sweetness, personality, and connection to your ceremony that adults simply can’t replicate. If you’re searching for tips for having flower children in your wedding, the biggest one is this: embrace the magic they bring.
Even in the most formal ceremonies, a shy smile or a handful of petals tossed a little too enthusiastically instantly warms the atmosphere. These perfectly imperfect moments often become the photos couples treasure the most.
When couples ask me for tips for having children in your wedding, I always share this first: have a plan B. Little ones can get overwhelmed, distracted, or suddenly decide that today is the perfect day to sprint in the opposite direction. It happens!
To keep things stress-free, have someone they trust—like a parent, grandparent, or older sibling—ready to gently guide them down the aisle if needed. Even just having a group of flower children walking down together, as Carter and Faith had in their mountain wedding, can help! A sea of unfamiliar faces can be intimidating, and having backup ensures that your flower girls and ring bearers feel safe, supported, and confident.

If you’re having a rehearsal, this is one part you definitely don’t want to skip. And if props are involved—baskets, wands, bubbles, petals, signs—practice with those, too! One of my favorite tips for having children in your wedding is to make the rehearsal fun so they associate the aisle walk with something exciting rather than intimidating.
You’d be surprised how hard it can be for a 5-year-old to toss petals and keep walking at the same time—but with a little practice, they nail it every time.

Help the little ones feel included by bringing them into moments throughout the day when it feels natural. Let the flower girls pop in during the getting-ready moments, or have the ring bearers hang out with the guys. Not only does this help them feel important, but it also creates the sweetest candid photos.

Stacie included her flower girls in every moment of the morning, even having them help her put on her shoes! You can read all about her Durham Museum wedding in this post!
These tiny moments of connection make your flower girls and ring bearers feel like part of the celebration rather than just performers with a job to do.

Flower children bring so much heart, humor, and genuine joy to a wedding day. With a little preparation—and a flexible mindset—you’ll set them up for the sweetest, most memorable walk down the aisle. If you’re looking for thoughtful, practical tips for having children in your wedding, the biggest takeaway is this: let them be kids, and the photos will be pure magic.
If you’re dreaming of images that capture all those perfectly imperfect moments, I’d love to be your photographer.
